New Year’s resolutions can be a great way to set goals and make positive changes in your life, but let’s be real – they can be tough to stick to. If you’re struggling to keep your resolutions this year, here are a few tips to help you stay on track:
- Set specific and achievable goals. Instead of resolving to “lose weight” or “exercise more,” try setting specific goals such as “lose 10 pounds” or “exercise for 30 minutes three times a week.” Specific, achievable goals are more likely to be successful than vague ones. For example one of my own personal new years resolution is to limit my screen time. However instead of just writing “limit screen time” I specified exactly how much time I would allow my self on each of my apps (i.e. 30 min on instagram – pro tip: you can manually limit your screen time by going to the app settings)
- Make a plan. Once you’ve set your goals, take the time to plan out how you’ll achieve them. Break your goals down into smaller, actionable steps and create a timeline for completing each step. Having a clear plan will make it easier to stay on track. If you plan on losing weight create clear actionable steps such as creating a weekly meal plan, aiming for a realistic weight loss for your first month, exercise 3 times a week, or simply incorporating the goal of going on a daily 30 minute walk.
- Find accountability. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or a professional coach, having someone to hold you accountable can be a great motivator. Share your goals with someone you trust and ask them to check in with you regularly to help you stay on track. If you aren’t comfortable having an accountability partner then try using an app. Using an accountability app such as Stickk or Beeminder, will boost your personal accountability and help you improve your habits.
- Track your progress. Seeing the progress you’ve made can be a great motivator. Keep track of your progress by writing down your accomplishments or using a tracking app. This will help you stay motivated and see how far you’ve come.
- Be kind to yourself. It’s important to remember that it’s okay to make mistakes and that progress doesn’t always come in a straight line. Be generous with yourself when things don’t go as planned and remember that it’s about the journey, not the destination.
By following these tips, you’ll be on your way to keeping your New Year’s resolutions and making positive changes in your life. Happy New Year!
